When it comes to college football, it doesn’t get better than the Florida Gators. The Gators have been playing college ball for a long time- over one hundred years, in fact. And during that time, they have created an enviable reputation for themselves. They have been SEC champions seven times, were national champs in 1996 and 2006 and had an undefeated season in 1995. To complete this tally of remarkable awards, they also have three Heisman Awards to their name and no less than 135 All Americans.

The Gatorade Connection

Everyone knows about Gatorade- it’s the definitive sports drink everyone counts on when they are on the field. Go to any locker room or just check out the sidelines of any playing field- you’re bound to find a few bottles of Gatorade. But did you know how this sports drink was born? Yes, it has everything to do with the Florida Gators! During the 1960s, it was noted that dehydration was a big problem for the Gators- after all, they were playing in the hot and humid conditions of the swamp. The University of Florida began to do some research and came up with Gatorade. The result? A few years later, the Gators went on to win the Orange Bowl.

The Gators have also gained popularity due to their intense rivalry with the Florida State Seminoles. This has led to a number of games that have since gone down in college football history. The most recent happened in 2004, when the game was played at the Bobby Bowden Field, a place where the Gators hadn’t won since 1986. To make matters worse, Gators coach Ron Zook had been informed that he would be sacked at the end of the season. Despite the fact that many Gator fans were not fond of Zooks, he was given a standing ovation when the Gators won the game.

Go Tim Tebow!

After winning the national championship in 2006, expectations are high for the Gators to maintain their winning momentum. A lot of hope is being pinned on a young man named Tim Tebow. Tebow has already started setting records, becoming the very first NCAA player to rush and pass for 20 touchdowns in a single season. He is also the first underclassman to ever win the Heisman Trophy. During the 2006-2007 season, it was mainly due to a number of Tebow’s plays that the Gators clinched that championship win. In 2007, Sporting News called him one of the Breakout Players of 2007. One thing that has always distinguished Tebow’s mode of play is his hard-hitting aggression. His strategy has worked for the most part- after all, he led the Gators in rushing in 2007. But he has also sustained a number of injuries because of this and has been lately playing with a broken hand and bruised shoulder. Recently, the Florida Coach announced that two quarterbacks would be used by the team in 2008 to take some of the pressure off Tebow.

The Gators and Tebow seem poised to break some more college football records this year. Fans and football enthusiasts are eager to see how they perform on the field.

Bring on the madness - Mississippi St. – 68, Florida – 59

Bring on the madness
Mississippi St. – 68, Florida – 59

After a very shaky start, the Gators (21-8, 8-6 Southeastern Conference) just couldn’t seem to find their rhythm and fell to the Mississippi State Bulldogs (20-8, 11-3) 68 – 59 last night at the O‘Connell Center.

The Gators were down by 12 points at the end of the first half. They came out with a little more spark in the second half and were able to lessen the lead to six, but not for very long.

Mississippi State’s Ben Hansbrough, along with Jarvis Varnado, the nation’s leading shot blocker, was on point and continued to widen the gap. Hansbrough had 20 points, including four 3-pointers. Varnado had 11 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks.

The Bulldog defense forced the Gators to shoot from the outside. The Gators were 7-of-25 from 3-point range and only shot 36 percent from the floor.

Florida sophomore and center, Marreese Speights, led the Gators with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Nick Calathes had 18 points, seven rebounds and four assists.

The Gators made a few costly mistakes, missing simple shots and getting turnovers, which affected the outcome of the game.

With another loss under their belt, the Gators’ road to the NCAA tournament for the 10th consecutive year may be coming to an end. This young team still has to play top-ranked Tennessee on Wednesday, followed by a tough Kentucky team.

NCAA tournament still in sight.
Florida – 77, Georgia – 64

The Florida-Georgia rivalry exists beyond football season and Jacksonville’s “largest outdoor cocktail party of the year.” The Gator basketball team met the Bulldogs last night at the Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, GA.

The Gators (21-7, 8-5 Southeastern Conference) needed another win after three straight road losses. They got it. Not only did they defeat the Georgia Bulldogs (12-14) 77 to 64, but the Gators completely dominated on Georgia’s court. They led the entire game, with the largest lead at 18 points.

Freshman Nick Calathes led the team with 22 points, four assists and two steals. Calathes has scored in the double digits in 12 out of 13 SEC games, the only time being held to seven against Georgia earlier this month at the O-Dome. Marreese Speights had 10 rebounds and contributed 15 points. Dan Werner had 13 points.

Florida had an extremely effective and quick-transition game, hitting over 40% from three-point range and 12 out of 17 free throws.

Wednesday night’s game marked the 101st win for the Gators in the history of FL-GA basketball, and Billy Donovan’s 18th win over the Bulldogs.

Next up, the Gators take on Mississippi State on Saturday, March 1 at 4 PM in the O’Connell Center.

Florida (20-7, 7-5 Southeastern Conference) beat South Carolina (12-13, 4-7) 85-82, on Wednesday night at the O’Connell Center.

The defeat over the Gamecocks ended a two-game losing streak for the Gators, bringing them another step closer to the NCAA tournament. It also marked the Gators’ 20th win in 10 straight years.

Nick Calathes led the team with 17 points and seven assists, followed by Dan Werner with 15 points. Marreese Speights had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Gators.

Florida was up 48-36 to start the second half. Even with the largest deficit at 17 points, the Gamecocks managed to claw their way back into the game making it 83-82 with only 7.5 seconds left on the clock.

After being fowled, Jai Lucas made both of his free throws to cushion the score.

Florida strategically fowled with a mere 2.2 seconds left in the game, sending South Carolina’s Devon Downey to the line for a one-and-one. The Gamecock game plan was for Downey to make the first and intentionally miss the second, in hopes of grabbing the rebound for another shot.

The plan went in favor of the Gators when he missed the first and Werner came down with the rebound and ran down the clock.

The Gators take on the Bulldogs in Georgia on February 27 at 7:30 PM.

Tourny ten will turn UF boys to men

The past decade reveals a long line of success for Gator men’s basketball, consisting of nine consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, three Final Fours and two back-to-back national championships. Specifically, the last two years, is a tough act to follow.
The young Gator squad (19-7, 6-5 Southeastern Conference) might be in a rebuilding year after losing a team of starters. However, the team knows what’s at stake and still has a lot to prove.
If the Gators wish to continue the trend of success by adding a tenth straight tournament appearance to the list, they must win this week’s games against South Carolina and Georgia. It is important for them to focus on each game as it comes and not let the talk of the upcoming tournament affect their play.
They may be young and inexperienced, but they certainly are a talented group. The Gators must learn from their previous losses, most recently to LSU (85-73) and Vanderbilt (61-58), and come out on top in the games ahead.
The regular season will finish with home games against Mississippi State and No. 2 Tennessee, followed by Kentucky, in Lexington.
Simply put by Coach Billy Donovan, if they win enough basketball games, they’re going to get in, if not, they won’t.

Gators Blow A 10 Point Lead & Lose To LSU 28-24

Filed under: Gator's Football — admin at 12:11 pm on Friday, October 12, 2007

8:00 PM ET, October 6, 2007
Tiger Stadium,
Baton Rouge, LA

The 9th ranked Gators traveled to Baton Rouge to take on the nations top ranked team after being upset the previous week by Auburn. A record crowd of 92,910 was on hand to witness what was to be a a wild and exciting game.

The Gators got the ball at the start of the game and orchastrated a nice 10 play, 47 yard drive that culminated in a Joey Ijjas 31 yard field goal. The best play of the drive was Kestahn Moore’s rush for 15 yards to the LSU 19 for a 1st down. Gator fans could not have asked for a better start to the game than a 3 point lead to silence the crowd a bit.

On the 3rd play of LSU’s opening drive, Matt Flynn’s pass was intercepted by Joe Haden at the Fla 45, and returned for 10 yards to the LSU 45. Things were looking really good for the Gators after scoring on their opening drive and then getting an interception on LSU’s opening drive. Gator fans everywhere were surely celebrating at this point in the game.

Points on turnovers is big in any level of football and the Gators did not do themselves a favor by gaining 1-yard on 3 plays and having to punt after the interception. Putting more points on the board after the interception would have been a huge for the Gators and would have been demoralizing for the LSU fans. Gotta give credit to the LSU defense for stepping up after the int and forcing the Gators to go 3 and out!

LSU get the ball back and drives 29 yards on 7 plays but the Gator D holds and LSU has to punt. The Gators D may be young but they are playing tough against LSU potent offense. The Gators get the ball back and put together a 12 plays 77 yard drive that ended with a Tim Tebow pass complete to Kestahn Moore for 2 yards for a TOUCHDOWN! Am I dreaming? Are the Gators up 10-0 in the 2nd quarter? I loved the camera shots of the shocked LSU fans throughout the stadium.

If there was a time that the Gators D needed to come up big and stop LSU it was LSU’s 1st drive of the 2nd quarter. LSU’s offense decides to come alive and they put together a 16 play 80 yard scoring drive where Ryan Perrilloux rushes for a 1 yard td. Now the Gators have a game on their hands. 10-7 sure does not feel as good as being up 10-0!

The Gator offense rises to the occassion and puts together a 10 plays 72 yard drive with Tebow scoring on a 9-yard td run. I’m fired up at how the Gators offense responds to the LSU scroing drive. Tebow and the offense seem to have forgot that they are playing in Baton Rouge and are surronded by 90,000 screaming LSU fans. I guess all of the nasty phone calls that the LSU fans made to Tebows cell phone during the week did not have the desired effect.

LSU gets the ball back and I was certain that they would respond with a touch down drive of their own. The Gators D held strong and forced LSU to attempt a 43-yard field goal by Colt David that was NO GOOD!

Im jacked up now! The Gators are going into halftime leading LSU by a score of 17-7. Who on earth would have thought we would be leading by 10 point going into halftime? I thought the game would be a lot closer at this point in the game. Gator Nation is partying like there’s no-tomorrow at halftime and LSU is saying “rut row” The college football gods are shining down on the Gators today. All we have to do is protect our 10-point lead for 2 more quarters and we beat the #1 team in the country.

LSU get the ball to start the 2nd half and all they do is put up a 15 play 70 yard scroing drive with Keiland Williams rushing for a 4 yard td. The Gators D does not rise to the occassion at the start of the 2nd half. I feel a big momentum shift now! The 90,000 LSU fans are now frothing at the mouth now that the score is 17-14.

Once again, Tebow and the offense sack up and put together a 5 play 75 yard scoring drive. Tebow hooked up with Cornelius Ingram for a nice 37 yard touchdown pass! Gators 24 LSU 14. Now i’m thinking that we have this game because Tebow and the offense can keep us ahead with scoring drives to match those of LSU. I now begin to wonder where the Gators will land in the rankings after this victory? I’m thinking 4 or 5?

LSU gets the ball and they are forced to punt after a 6 play 19 yard drive. The Gator D came up big in stopping this LSU drive. Now all we had to do was put up 7 more points and the victory would be ours!

The Gators get the ball and start their drive to victory. But wait, we fumble the ball after driving 30 yards to the 50 yard line! Where are the college football gods now? This was to be the drive to put the nail in the LSU coffin.

Remember what I said earlier about point on turnovers being crucial? LSU drives 31 yards on 6 plays and Colt David misses a 37-yard field goal. The Gators missed a bullet that time. I figure that LSU regains momentum if they put up some points after recovering the fumble. We were lucky that Colt David has not been accurate of late.

This is where I become a little upset. On the 2nd play of the drive Tebow throws an interception at our 27 yard-line. Tebow gave LSU an early christmas present with that int! LSU is now in good shape on our 27 yard line! The wheels seem to be falling off the Gator bus at this point.

LSU takes advantage of the turnover and goes 27 yards on 5 plays for the touchdown! Points on turnovers are crucial! especially in big time games! Gators 24 LSU 21. It seems ages ago that the Gators were winning 10-0 and then 17-7. I now have a sick feeling in my stomach and it was not from the chips and dip I was devouring.

We get the ball back and all is not lost because we are up by 3 points and we have the ball. All we have to do is move the ball and eat up some clock. So what do we do? We go 3 and out on 3 plays for 6 yards. What happened to Tebow and the offense that had responded with long drives earlier in the game? The LSU D was fired up and they had the momentum at this point. Defenses get fired up and motivated when their offense turns their turnovers into points. Points on turnovers has a positive effect on the entire team and this was evident now.

All is still not lost for the Gators. We are forced to punt but we still have the lead with 9:20 remaining in the game. Our defense needs to batten down the hatches and stop the LSU ship bearing down on them. This defensive series would be big for the Gators. Stop LSU and we probably win, let LSU score and we are Gator nuggets.

We punt the ball and LSU does what I had feared. They go on a 15 play 60 yard scoring drive that eats up 8:11 off the clock. Not only does LSU go ahead 28-24, but they also leave us with only 1:09 on the clock.

Now we have our backs against the wall. We have to drive down the field with 1:09 with 90,000 rabid LSU fans screaming and yelling. Things look bleak for Gator Nation. Could Tebow drive down the field in this hostile environment and bring victory to the Gators? We would soon find out!

After 1 complete pass, a pass interference call, and a Tebow 21-yard scramble, the Gators are at the LSU 46 with 00:12 on the clock. Not good! The Gators stop the clock with a time out and we need a good chunk of yardage on the next play to keep us alive. On the next play Tebow is sacked and called for intentional grounding. The Gators call a time out with 00:05 left on the clock. It’s now 2nd and 12 at the LSU 46 with 00:05 on the clock. Things could not be more futile for the Gators. The only hope is for Tebow to launch one into the end zone and hope for a Gator miracle. Tebow takes the snap and a few seconds later he muscles a deep pass into the endzone where the pass is broken up by LSU’s R J. Gillen. Gator’s lose.

I am in a daze! How did we blow a 10-point lead and lose this game? Turnovers and our young defense lost the game for us. Tebow and the offense did their part and had us up by 10 points but the defense could not stop the well oiled LSU machine. The Gators lose 2 games in a row and hopefully Myer can pull the team together and fix the defensive problems. I believe that when and if our defense gets it together we will be a tough team to beat.

Gators Lose To Auburn Again! Auburn 20 Florida 17

Filed under: Gator's Football — admin at 8:50 pm on Thursday, October 4, 2007

The 90,685 Gator fans at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium hoped they were having a collective nightmare and they would wake up and find that their beloved Gators were not going to lose to Auburn for the 2nd straight year.

The tone of the game was set on Auburn’s opening drive when Florida was called for running into the kicker penalty that kept Auburn’s drive alive. That penalty seemed to knock the wind out of the Gator defense who allowed the Auburn to march down the field and score on a 6-yard Kodi Burn’s run. If we don’t run into the Auburn kicker, we get the ball and probably drive down and score which would have set the tempo the way we are used to.

During the 1st half the Gators were awful on defense and the offense was non-existant. Where was the Gator team that performed like a well-oiled machine the previous 4-weeks? How do we go in at halftime losing to Auburn 14-0? Are we not the #4 ranked team in the nation and the defending champions? By halftime, the champions had dug themselves a deep hole with 90,685 staring in disbelief.

In the 3rd quarter the Gators squeak out 3 points while allowing Aubrun to pad their score with another 3! I felt that if we held them to 0 points in the 3rd quarter and we put up 7 we would be in good shape. That did not happen.

Finally in the 4th quarter the Auburn curse was lifted and the Gators came alive. Auburn fumbled and the Gators took advantage with a 6-yard Ingram score. The Gators defense came awake and they forced Auburn to punt the ball away on it’s next possession. Tebow then engineers a monstrous 82 yard drive in the 4th culminated into a 2 yard touchdown that tied the game.

At this point I feel the momentum shift our way and I am sure that the Gators will win. No sooner had I assured myself a Gator victory and we shank the punt that gives Auburn great field position. That shanked punt gives Wes Byrum the chance to become an Auburn larger than life hero as he boots a 43 yard field goal to win the game as time expires. Byrum missed his only attempt last week but he is dead on this week against the Gators.

Things don’t get any easier next week for the Gators who get the unpleasant task of taking on #1 ranked LSU. Can the Gators rise up after such a bitter defeat like they did last season? The Gators are the defending national champs and I have a feeling that they will learn from this and start playing like champs again next week.

Rebels give Gator Nation a Scare

Filed under: Gator's Football — Tim at 8:36 pm on Sunday, September 23, 2007

This week the Gators learned first hand why the SEC is regarded as the toughest conference in the country.  It seemed everybody, including myself, thought this would be a relatively easy game for us.  Coach Meyer knew better.  He knew that anytime you go on the road in this conference you are in for a battle.  The Ole Miss Rebels definitely were up for the fight.

In our first road game of the year, the Gators managed to squeeze by Ole Miss with a final score of 30-24.  The Rebels came out strong and were able to hold us scoreless in the 1st quarter.  Their defense was all over us for much of the first half.  They must have done some good preparation this week because they had us scouted pretty well.  For the first time all year the offense wasn’t able to execute at will.  Even though we managed to end the first half leading 14-6, the Rebels were feeling pretty good about the way they were playing.  And who could blame them?

We bounced back in the second half though, with Tebow willing the boys to a 27-6 lead.  It felt like we finally had the ball rolling and we were on our way to another big victory.  Then, all of a sudden the Rebels just turned it on.  Quarterback Seth Adams quickly threw 2 touchdowns, including a 71 yard pass to receiver Mike Wallace.  I don’t know about you guys, but I started to get a little worried.  They had all the momentum and the advantage of playing in front of their home fans.  Luckily, senior Tony Joiner was able to come up with a huge interception for us.  Tebow took over again, driving down the field and setting us up for a field goal which made the score 30-24.  That is where it would stay.

I’d say 3 things led to this game being so close

1. Our young defense
2. 1st road trip of the year, and 1st ever for our 18 freshman
3. Ole Miss just plain came out to play

After the game Derrick Harvey said, “We were nervous for a while, but thank goodness we’ve got Tim Tebow on our team”.  Funny, I was thinking the exact same thing.  Tebow carried us the whole game.  He threw for 261 yards and 2 touchdowns, and rushed for a Gator quarterback record of 166 yards with 2 more touchdowns.  It was another strong showing for the Heisman hopeful.  I think it’s great that he is living up to expectations and playing so well, but we really need some more guys to step up, especially on defense.  I’m starting to feel like I’m writing a Tim Tebow blog.  Maybe Major Wright can be that guy.

The Gators remain undefeated at 4-0, but after this close call we dropped to #4 in the AP Poll, switching places with Oklahoma.  Not a big deal as long as we keep winning.  Next week we return to the Swamp to take on Auburn at 8PM.  The game coincidentally falls on my birthday which has to be good luck.  I’ll be partying hard to celebrate so next weeks post might be a little detail-lacking and I’m apologizing for that in advance.  I was way off with my prediction last week, so let’s see if I can rebound.  Here’s my prediction for the Auburn game:

Gators - 38
Auburn - 24

Thanks for reading and let’s see some more comments!

This is the beginning of our little Gator animated comic strip.  With some help, we can come up with a name for this ‘comic strip’ and some material for future animations.  This is Col. Reb, and I believe he is takeing it up the Toddy from Sir Albert!
