After the Big Game

In their eyes, just playing for the National Championship is not enough for the players, the fans or the coaches. When you take out the emotion and look strictly at the talent, being chosen to play for the national championship is a tremendous honor, win or lose.

Chris Lowry, of the Star 99.5, said of Bob Stoops, “ always the bridesmaid, never the bride.” To earn the right to play in this game as many times as coach Stoops has, is an outstanding accomplishment. Yes, bridesmaids have to spend a lot of money to buy ugly dresses that they will wear only once but they get to drink just as much punch as the bride. Congratulations to Coach Stoops for his accomplishments and our hats off to his contribution to college football.

After the big game, the local media has covered everything from the triumphant return of the players in” Gator One” to interviewing the people whose job it is to clean up after a city celebrating their third National Football Championship. The transformation of Title town from an almost deserted community on Wednesday to a celebration by the masses on University Avenue Thursday evening was quick.

Congratulations to Coach Urban Meyer and his entire team for bringing home the Crystal trophy and it pleases me to no end to be lucky enough to be a part of Gator nation and witness history in the making firsthand. I picked a great time to become a college football fan.

Now for my prediction on Tim Tebow’s future, those on talk radio all have opinions on what he should and should not do and they give many reasons as support. But the pundits failed to take into consideration what it means to be a Florida Gator. I think Superman will stick around, finish his senior year and ponder whether he should try for back to back National Championships or a second Heisman trophy. I look forward to seeing Tim Tebow play football for the Florida Gators one more year. Go Gators!

The Heisman Memorial Trophy Award was named after college football coach John Heisman. The downtown Athletic Club of New York City presents this award each year to the best player in college football. Although there are other awards, the Heisman is the most prestigious.

The first contest between Florida Quarterback Tim Tebow and the Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford goes to Bradford. Bradford becomes the second sophomore to walk away with the Heisman, Tim Tebow being the first.

Interestingly, if Tebow returns to UF to finish his senior year, he could again be pitted against Bradford for the trophy next year.

Five players from Oklahoma have won this award in past years. Three, Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel and Tim Tebow, have won for the University of Florida.

All three of Florida’s Heisman trophy winners have been sons of ministers. So what does that mean? Absolutely nothing, its just one of those little tidbits of information that sports fans seek out and offer up in conversations.

Heisman trophy winners are an interesting lot. They include names like Tom Harmon, the running back for Michigan who won the award in 1940 and went onto have an outstanding career in sports broadcasting. His son, Marc, is the star of NCIS on CBS television. OJ Simpson took the award in 1968 as a running back for USC and Chris Weinke, quarterback for FSU, who took FSU to their first undefeated season took home the trophy in 2000 becoming the oldest recipient to receive the Heisman. Incidentally, that year he beat out a Virginia tech quarterback by the name of Micheal Vick. For what its worth, Danny Wuerffel in 1996 beat out Peyton Manning for the award.

Now that the Heisman presentation is history, we can all look forward taking the National Championship one more time on January 8 at Dolphin stadium. Go Gators!

Florida Defeats Alabama to Play for a National Title

by Gatorette on December 8, 2008

As a new fan to football, I realized Saturday that I had never watched a real football game until I saw Florida take on Alabama for the SEC championship THAT was a football game. I am told that I won’t see another game of that caliber until Florida takes on Oklahoma for the national title.

The Alabama game showed us that when the Gators take Percy Harvin out of the mix, it pretty much becomes the Tim Tebow show. I especially liked the roommate to roommate touchdown pass, Tebow to Riley Cooper. But the teamwork never goes away. I have heard several sportscasters refer to Tim Tebow as the greatest quarterback in college football and its true. One of the sports commentators on FOX pointed out that the match up between Oklahoma and Florida could pit Heisman trophy winner against Heisman trophy winner or a good quarterback against a two- time Heisman trophy winner.

Watching the Gators play is just downright fun. This is a great time for Florida football and these are the times in the future that I am sure will be referred to as the Gator’s finest hour. The accomplishments of these Gators brings pride to the entire Gator nation and should strike fear in the hearts of every player on the Oklahoma team.

Gator fans who couldn’t make it to Atlanta celebrated in the streets of Gainesville the winning of the SEC championship.

So now its onto Miami on January 8 for a showdown in dolphin stadium. Go Gators!

The story is in 1995 Steve Spurrier ran up the score against the Georgia Bulldogs 52 to 17 just because he could. He allegedly said “they never had anyone hang half a hundred on them.” In the swamp Saturday night, the Gators hung half a hundred on the Gamecocks with a 56 to [...]
