The story is in 1995 Steve Spurrier ran up the score against the Georgia Bulldogs 52 to 17 just because he could. He allegedly said “they never had anyone hang half a hundred on them.” In the swamp Saturday night, the Gators hung half a hundred on the Gamecocks with a 56 to 6 victory.
I don’t believe that Urban Meyer’s Gators did it to make a point or to please the fans that never forgave Spurrier for leaving Gainesville or to teach a lesson to a man who played football, won the Heisman trophy, any number of SEC championships and a National Championship as a Gator. I think that the Gamecocks could not stop the Gators but more importantly the Gators couldn’t stop themselves.
Urban Meyer is a pedal to the metal coach till the game is over but this year’s Florida Gators are like a team possessed and keep giving one thousand percent until they hit the showers. Tim Tebow and the rest of the team could no more ease off and coast to an easy victory than Steve Spurrier could had he been in the driver’s seat.
Two great legendary college football coaches clashed on the field in Gainesville. The Gators won thanks to Ole Miss. The loss to Ole Miss and Tebow’s speech afterwards built a fire under this team that may very well propel them to another National Championship.
Even a new fan to football from Brooklyn knows that when an alligator and a rooster go out to lunch only the alligator returns. Go Gators!
